Deep
in sleep, across the veil
She dares to walk beyond the pale
Touch of caution can't convince
In the dreams he's haunted since
Starving moth to his red flame
What lies between them has no name
She would not deny the lust
Blood in barter, heart in trust
Terrified inside her mind
Cautious yet of what she'll find
Need to answer hunger's call
Kills the dim of terror's pall
Love of fear or fearing love
She will meet him, hawk and dove
Knowing he will never press
She admits her own duress
By his touch, her heart is freed,
Or by his blade, her fate decreed?
In his eyes, she catches flame
Lost in hunger, drowned in shame
Need no other can abate
Will starvation be her fate?
Destined to a deadly bed?
Or sweetly joined and hunger fed?
Even as she hears his moan
Still she knows she'll wake alone
This, of all, she fears to do
Only dreams are haven true.
