“You can’t really expect to see every Vermeer in the world,” said Lillian Hersh on their way back from the opera. “What about 'The Concert' that was stolen in 1990 and was never recovered.”
Barney smiled. “I told you about the few months I worked for Mason Verger. There was a room in his mansion that was off-limits to me. Once, I kind of accidentally found it unlocked and peeked in. There was a painting that I later realized was the stolen Vermeer. It was the first Vermeer I’d ever seen, and inspired me to want to see them all.”
